Watering indoor plants: when and how much?

A calendar can be a useful reminder. But it is the potting mix that tells you whether your plant needs water.

Check before you pour

Touch the potting mix and check the weight of the pot. How much it should dry depends on the species, season, light and pot size. Do not water automatically just because a week has passed.

Let excess water drain away

The nursery pot needs drainage holes. Water when needed, let the excess drain and empty any water left in the saucer or decorative pot.

A leaf is a clue, not a diagnosis

A yellow leaf can have several causes. Check the light, soil moisture and roots before adding water or fertiliser. Changing one thing at a time helps you understand how the plant responds.
